2012 National High School
Mock Trial Championship

May 3 - 6, 2012 Albuquerque, New Mexico

¡Bienvenidos!

The Center for Civic Values, the State Bar of New Mexico and the National High School Mock Trial Championship, Inc., Board of Directors are delighted to welcome participants and guests to the 2012 Tournament in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Along with our major cosponsors -- the American Board of Trial Advocates ("ABOTA") Foundation and the University of New Mexico School of Law -- we look forward to hosting an outstanding event in the Land of Enchantment!

FranchiniThe 2012 tournament is dedicated in loving memory to The Hon. Gene E. Franchini, a dedicated CCV board member and a passionate advocate of mock trial, a program that has touched the lives of thousands of our state's high school students since 1978.

The National High School Mock Trial Championship is the premiere national law-related academic tournament for high school students. Mock trials are designed to give students an inside perspective on the legal system, providing them with an understanding of the mechanism through which society chooses to resolve many of its disputes. Participation in a performance-based, hands-on program provides students with practical knowledge about how our legal system functions and who the major players are in that system.

Participation in a mock trial program provides students with the opportunity to improve important life skills, including oral advocacy, critical thinking and effective communication. Quality preparation, teamwork and the importance of following the rules are also emphasized. These attributes will benefit mock trial students throughout their lives, regardless of their chosen careers.

CCV looks forward to providing a rewarding, educational experience, while giving participants a little taste of life in the Land of Enchantment. We encourage state coordinators and teachers to visit Justice by the People sponsored by ABOTA, that enables mock trial students to practice their skills. It features Make Your Case, an interactive game that allows students to control the action as they experience a real courtroom setting.

Tournament Details

The four preliminary rounds of competition will be held on Friday and Saturday in downtown Albuquerque. The Courthouses are within walking distance of the host hotels. The Championship Round will be held in the Rio Grande Ceremonial Courtroom in the impressive Pete V. Domenici United States District Court for the District of New Mexico. The championship event will culminate with an Awards Gala on Saturday evening, followed by a dance for the students.

The Land of Enchantment

We hope that those who travel to Albuquerque for the 2012 National Championship will take advantage of their time to explore the Desert Southwest. The weather in early May ranges from an average low of 50 degrees to an average high of 80 degrees.

It should be beautiful for an early morning (before it gets too warm) hike or mountain bike ride on one of the many trails in the nearby Sandia Mountains. For those who want to explore the Southwest outside of the Rio Grande Valley, Santa Fe – the City Different – is just one hour to the north, while Acoma Pueblo – the city that has been continually inhabited longer than anywhere else in the country is just an hour west from Albuquerque.

Get involved today!

Volunteers are in high demand—we need people to serve as judges and jurors, administrative volunteers, and courthouse liaisons.

If you would like to make a tax-deductible contribution to support the 2012 National Championship, please refer to the Sponsor Opportunities page.

We look forward to welcoming everyone to Albuquerque in May of 2012!
